Mabel Park State High School's Basketball Excellence Program provides student athletes pathways to excel. This program is offered from year 7 all the way through until graduation in year 12. It is specifically designed to help develop basketball skills through elite level and highly qualified coaches. Our program is designed to incorporate a wide range of ability levels and will work specifically to develop each student to their full potential.
We deliver structured trainings that will focus on skill development fostering a game-based approach to improve basketball IQ during games. This is also accompanied by our highly knowledgeable strength and conditioning coaches designed to elevate the overall athlete and their game. We will push students outside their comfort zone and into high pressure, high intensity training sessions to ensure they learn the skills essential to play at the level we expect from our students.
Mabel Park basketball program is integrated within the HPE curriculum. Year 7-9 students will participate in one theory class a week where they will learn about various parts of the HPE curriculum. During the practical sessions, student athletes will work with our coaches to develop further through strength & conditioning and skill development 4 times a week. Furthermore, our coaches dedicate their own time to run team trainings before and after school to further extend our athletes.
During year 10-12 students have the option to continue basketball through a Certificate II in Sports Coaching in year 10 and Sport and Recreation in year 11 and 12. These subjects are specifically designed to continue to enhance our athlete's development while offering a more practical approach to the classroom learning.
Throughout the year, we compete in a variety of competitions. If selected into a team, students will have the opportunity to participate in:
- Sophomore CBSQ
- Junior CBSQ
- Senior CBSQ
- Australian School basketball Championships
- Super 6
- Cleveland Classic
- Premier League
- Logan District Champions
- Friendly matches set up throughout the year against other schools
We promote and encourage our athletes to continue to work on basketball outside of school. We aim to help students with trial dates to play at club and representative level. We will consistently push for improvement and will expect more from our players throughout the year. They will be held accountable for their attendance, behaviour and effort in our class and others. This will create a “winning" environment in the areas of leadership, accountability, responsibility and resilience to be the best they can be both on and off the court.
