Welcome to Mabel Park State High School Hair and Beauty, where creativity meets real-world industry experience!
Our Hair and Beauty program gives students the opportunity to explore their passion for beauty, make-up and hair while working towards nationally recognised qualifications. From creating flawless make-up looks and professional beauty treatments to learning salon styling techniques, students develop practical skills in an exciting, supportive and industry recognised environment.
Our courses include:
- Certificate III in Beauty Services
- Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics
- Certificate II in Salon Assistant
Whether students dream of becoming a beauty therapist, make-up artist, hairdresser, salon owner, cosmetic retail specialist or working within the film, fashion and entertainment industries, our programs provide a strong foundation for future study, employment and apprenticeships.
Learn in our school salon
Students train in our professional salon that is an independent registered business using industry-quality products, equipment and current techniques.
Learning is practical, creative and hands on. Students have opportunities to:
- Perform services on classmates and paying salon clients from our local community
- Create professional hair, make-up and beauty looks
- Build confidence in client communication and consultation
- Participate in product knowledge sessions and industry workshops
- Meet guest educators, brand representatives and industry professionals

Students are expected to participate professionally and follow salon presentation, hygiene, safety and industry dress standards.
Industry connections and future pathways
Mabel Park Hair and Beauty is proud to work with industry professionals, education providers and leading hair and beauty brands.
Our partnership with The French Beauty Academy, one of Australia's leading beauty education providers, gives students greater insight into further education and potential career pathways in beauty, dermal therapies and wellness.
Throughout their studies, students may also participate in workshops, product training, guest presentations and industry networking opportunities.
Queensland Certificate of Education points
Successful completion of a Certificate II qualification may contribute up to four points towards a student's Queensland Certificate of Education.
Successful completion of the Certificate III in Beauty Services may contribute up to eight points towards the Queensland Certificate of Education and may also contribute towards an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank pathway, subject to current Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority requirements.
Course costs and resources
The school provides the products, equipment and resources required for students to complete their practical assessments.
Students may choose to purchase personal products or equipment for home practice, but this is not a compulsory course requirement.
- Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics: $125 per year
- Certificate II in Salon Assistant: $125 per year
- Certificate III in Beauty Services: $150 per year
Courses are generally completed over a two to three year period, depending on the qualification, timetable and individual student progress.

The Certificate III in Beauty Services is a nationally recognised qualification that introduces students to a wide range of beauty treatments and salon services. Students develop practical experience while learning how to deliver safe, professional and welcoming client experiences.
Students may learn:
- Make-up application
- Skin preparation and skincare
- Facials
- Manicures and pedicures
- Waxing services
- Spray tanning
- Lash and brow services
- Ear piercing
- Client consultation
- Retail and product knowledge
- Small-business and salon skills
Students practise services on one another and may perform treatments on approved salon clients under supervision.

The Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics introduces students to the colourful and creative world of make-up and cosmetic retail. Students learn how to provide product advice, perform make-up services and create looks for different clients, occasions and creative briefs.
Students may also develop a portfolio showcasing their practical work.

Certificate II in Salon Assistant

The Certificate II in Salon Assistant gives students an introduction to working in a professional hair salon. Students learn how a salon team works together to provide an excellent client experience while supporting qualified hairdressers with everyday salon services.
This course is ideal for students considering a future hairdressing or barbering apprenticeship.

- Shampooing and basin services
- Blow-drying
- Braiding
- Upstyling
- Hair preparation

All services are performed by students under the guidance and supervision of qualified trainers, giving students valuable real world experience while providing our community with affordable treatments in a welcoming and professional salon environment.
