​Welcome to Mabel Park State High School Hair and Beauty.

The program specialises in hair, make-up and beauty. We offer a Certificate III in Beauty, Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics (make-up) and Certificate II in Salon Assistant (hairdressing).

If your student loves making themselves and others look and feel great and would like to work in this field, these subjects will introduce them to this dynamic and exciting industry. Your student will develop the knowledge and skills to create a 'total look' from head to toe.

We provide hands on experience in a simulated salon environment and industry exposure. Your student will use industry professional products and industry current techniques.

All off the core and elective units of competencies are in the following documents. On completion of a Certificate II students will receive 4 points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education and 8 points if completing a Certificate III in Beauty. The Certificate III in Beauty also counts towards the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) pathway.

All resources are provided by the school to meet assessment requirements. The Certificate II courses (Make-up and Hairdressing) are $125 annually and the Certificate III course (Beauty) is $150 annually. (2-3 year course of study). Some students may wish to purchase their own kits for home but this is not a compulsory requirement of the course.

Cert III Beauty

Course overview

The Certificate III in Beauty Services is a nationally recognised qualification, concentrating on a basic range of treatments used in the beauty industry. It is an option for those who would like to secure early employment in the industry before continuing on to Diploma level studies.

Students considering enrolment in Hair and Beauty certificates need to be aware that skill development will require students to practice on each other and clients. This will involve touching persons and self, but will always be practiced and applied in accordance with industry codes of practice and ethics. Industry dress codes will apply.

Practical Experience & Industry Networking

Industry experience is recommended but not a requirement of this course. Students will be required to complete practical experience at the School Salon. Students will have the opportunity to meet industry experts through invitations to our product knowledge days and guest speakers. Our partnerships include Kryolan, Crown and Dateline Imports.

Career Outcomes

The Certificate III in Beauty Services provides opportunities for employment in salons, usually in a junior or supervised role, home-based or mobile businesses. This course provides a pathway into Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50121), Diploma of Screen & Media (CUA51020), Diploma of Salon Management (SHB50216).

Cert II Makeup/Retail Cosmetics

Course overview

The Makeup Certificate, known as a Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics, is a nationally recognised qualification, introducing students to the creative world of make-up artistry. Throughout the course, the student will develop a portfolio of day, business evening and bridal looks.  Develop skills in specialist make-up applications including photographic make-up, cosmetic camouflage make-up and spray tanning.

Students considering enrolment in Hair and Beauty certificates need to be aware that skill development will require students to practice on each other and clients. This will involve touching persons and self, but will always be practiced and applied in accordance with industry codes of practice and ethics. Industry dress codes will apply.

Practical Experience & Industry Networking

Industry experience is recommended but not a requirement of this course. Students will be required to complete practical experience at the School Salon. Students will have the opportunity to meet industry experts at industry only events. Students will be exposed to product training through the school's industry partnerships. Our partnerships include and Issada Cosmetics & Crown Cosmetics.

  • Makeup (photographic and Camouflage)
  • Skincare
  • Basic Facial
  • Lash and Brow services

  • Small Business knowledge
  • Facial Waxing (employability skills)
  • Spray Tanning (employability skills)

Career Outcomes

The Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics provides opportunities for employment in retail stores and beauty salons, usually in a junior or supervised role, home-based or mobile businesses. This course provides a pathway into Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50126), Diploma of Screen & Media (CUA51020). Some units completed as part of the Certificate II can be credited towards a Certificate III, IV, or Diploma of Beauty Therapy.

Cert II in Salon Assistant/Hairdressing

Course overview

A Certificate II in Salon Assistant is a nationally recognized training qualification. Throughout the course, students will learn how a salon and a hairdressing team work together to create a client experience. You will learn how to work as salon assistants, communicating in the workplace, interacting with and providing service to clients and assisting senior hairdressers.


Students considering enrolment in Hair and Beauty certificates need to be aware that skill development will require students to practice on each other and clients. This will involve touching persons and self, but will always be practiced and applied in accordance with industry codes of practice and ethics. Industry dress codes will apply.

 

Practical Experience & Industry Networking

Industry experience is recommended but not a requirement of this course. Students will be required to complete practical experience at the School Salon. Students will have the opportunity to meet industry experts at industry only events. Students will be exposed to product training through the school's industry partnerships. Our partnerships include Dateline and Keune Hair Cosmetics.

Practical course areas include-

  • Braiding
  • Basin skills
  • Hair colouring
  • Blow drying
  • Upstyling

 

Career Outcomes

This course is a stepping-stone to a hairdressing apprenticeship, Certificate III, IV, Certificate III in Barbering or a Diploma of Salon Management.
